Eldritch Horror Theatre - Ch. 21: How Many Fighters Like You Are There?
"When did I kill anyone?"
Facing Tan Mingxue's accusations, Fu Qian asked nonchalantly.
"Still playing dumb?"
Tan Mingxue sneered.
"The conflict here yesterday is already widely known. You killed a Beyonder with your own hands, don't tell me you're trying to deny it?"
"I'm sorry, but everything related to Beyonders falls under our jurisdiction. Since this involves a Beyonder's death, you need to come with me."
"Oh, you mean that?"
Fu Qian didn't look panicked at all.
"Someone did indeed die here yesterday, but he fell from the fourth floor and fell to his death."
"You can explain that to me slowly after you come back with me."
Tan Mingxue said coldly, a flash of murderous intent passing over her.
"My patience has its limits. If you continue to be stubborn, don't blame me for being impolite."
"Team Leader Tan!"
Wen Li grew a bit anxious at this point.
"Mr. Fu is a bodyguard we legitimately hired. The conflict only happened because an assassin was trying to harm me. Mr. Fu was merely fulfilling his duties. How can you be so unreasonable?"
Seeing Wen Li's reaction, Tan Mingxue's expression softened slightly.
"We are just taking Mr. Fu to help verify a few things. If there are no issues, he will be back soon. Miss Wen, please wait peacefully."
"After all, this involves a severe struggle and the death of a Beyonder. We need to be responsible for everyone's safety. Please understand."
It seems this woman won't let it go today unless she takes me away, Fu Qian thought to himself.
According to the information he had looked up, they indeed had the authority to intervene in any conflict involving Beyonders.
But it only happened yesterday, inside the Wen Family estate, and she had already rushed over today. Fu Qian wouldn't believe it if there weren't other factors at play.
Thinking of Young Master Ye, who hadn't shown up all day, did he really resort to snitching?
He must have directly leaked the incident to cause the Night Watchers to come and trouble him.
Even if he couldn't use them to kill him, he could at least use the opportunity to figure out some of his background.
Furthermore, the Night Watchers' attitude was also rather peculiar. Although Tan Mingxue spoke tactfully, it was obvious she wouldn't allow Wen Li to follow them.
Is she disliked to this extent?
At present, he only had two choices.
Option 1: Go with Team Leader Tan, leave the Eldest Miss Wen here, and rely on that group of bodyguards and Young Master Ye's party to keep her alive for a while.
Option 2: Refuse to cooperate, activate Asura Mode, directly kill Team Leader Tan Mingxue, and then deal with the endless stream of Night Watchers that follow, taking them down one by one until no one is left to disturb his mission completion.
It was a bit too Asura.
Although leaving Miss Wen here meant her life would likely be in danger, Option 2 would just let the assassins sit back and watch the show.
The key point was that Wen Li would probably be scared out of her mind, which wasn't a good thing for a Mental Type player like her.
Fu Qian decided to cooperate for now and go gauge the strength of the local Night Watchers.
He could also gather some intel for the Asura route.
"No problem, I'll take a trip with you."
Under Wen Li's worried gaze, Fu Qian followed Tan Mingxue and drove out of the Wen Family mansion.
In the crowd, Fu Qian spotted Mr Ji, who had fought him twice yesterday, while Young Master Ye was hidden away securely.
……
The journey was quite long. The car went round and round, and just as Fu Qian was about to lose his patience, it finally stopped.
"After you."
Tan Mingxue got off first. Fu Qian followed suit, seeing the Night Watchers' Nightwatcher Base for the first time.
This place was much more down-to-earth than he had imagined.
In sharp contrast to the Wen Family's scenic private villa, the Night Watchers' Nightwatcher Base was actually located in a busy downtown area.
From the outside, it looked ordinary enough, though it was quite large in area.
It wasn't until he followed Tan Mingxue inside the Nightwatcher Base that he felt it was out of the ordinary.
The layout inside the building was clearly quite meticulous, and many areas were made of special materials.
There weren't many people walking around, but each of them carried a domineering aura, showing extraordinary strength.
"Some other relevant personnel will be here shortly."
Tan Mingxue led Fu Qian to an office, gestured for him to sit down, and pulled out a delicate Notebook.
"Before that, I need to confirm a few simple questions with you."
"Go ahead,"
Fu Qian replied lazily while looking around.
"Is Fu Qian your real name? Theoretically, all Beyonder information must be registered within the Night Watchers, but I checked all the records, and you have never been filed."
"Of course it is. As for why there is no data on me, it's probably because I haven't been a Beyonder for long."
"Oh?"
Tan Mingxue rolled her eyes.
"Based on the current information, your strength is at least Tier 6. Are you trying to tell me you went from an ordinary person to a Middle Tier Beyonder in a matter of days?"
"Is that not allowed? The other night, this old man was observing the astronomical phenomena, suddenly felt something in his heart, and gained an epiphany."
Bang! Tan Mingxue slammed the Notebook in her hand hard on the table.
"Do you know who you killed yesterday?"
"An assassin. Let me emphasize again, I only injured him. He fell to his death himself."
"And as a professional bodyguard, I was merely fulfilling my duties."
"Professional bodyguard."
Tan Mingxue laughed out of sheer anger.
"A professional bodyguard with a hefty monthly salary of twenty-five thousand, is it? Your asking price really isn't high!"
"Small profits, quick returns. We run on word of mouth!"
……
"What's going on?"
Just as Tan Mingxue was about to enter a berserk state, the office door creaked open, and a bespectacled man in his thirties walked in.
"This guy is simply unreasonable. You ask him."
Tan Mingxue snorted and stood up.
"Experts always have distinct personalities!"
The bespectacled man smilingly took the Notebook, flipped through it, reached out his hand to Fu Qian, and introduced himself.
"Mr. Fu, right? I am Qi Xue."
"Please don't misunderstand. Troubling you to come over today is purely due to our duty.
After all, with a Middle Tier expert suddenly appearing in our jurisdiction, we must have a grasp on the situation.
As for the conflict, Beyonders are full of vigor; fighting and killing are inevitable. It's impossible for us to manage everything."
Look at that, both in the same line of work, but his professional ethics are much better. Fu Qian nodded.
"Okay, go ahead and ask."
"We already have the basic information."
The bespectacled man flipped through Tan Mingxue's Notebook.
"Then let me first ask the question I'm most curious about. How did an expert like you end up as a bodyguard for the Wen Family?"
"Entrusted by someone."
"Who?"
The bespectacled man immediately perked up.
……
After asking a few more painless questions, the bespectacled man finally put down the Notebook.
"Thank you for your cooperation. You may leave."
"Hey!"
Tan Mingxue grew anxious.
"How can you let him go?"
"Based on the current information, Mr. Fu's past is quite clean. The conflict was indeed within the scope of his duties. As for having no prior record, it's fine now that we have one."
The bespectacled man waved his hand, signaling Tan Mingxue not to say more.
He turned his head to Fu Qian.
"If Mr. Fu has any questions, you can ask us as well."
Questions?
Fu Qian thought for a moment and pointed at him and Tan Mingxue.
"Inside the Nightwatcher Base, how many fighters like you are there?"
