Eldritch Horror Theatre - Ch. 76: Service with a Smile

There really was something fishy going on!

After reading everything on the stone in one breath, Fu Qian let out a long sigh.

He knew Geng Yue’s repeated cycle of dying and coming back to life was highly suspicious.

As expected, there was a mysterious entity manipulating things from behind the scenes, and there was a high probability that it was the very tree he had seen.

Many of his doubts now made perfect sense.

Thinking about it now, Geng Yue’s first death was to distract his attention and make him suspect Lu Xing.

The second time, when he already suspected Huang Yuanchang, Geng Yue did the exact opposite and didn't die. This anomaly successfully attracted his attention, causing him to not go after Huang Yuanchang immediately and instead waste time on Lu Xing again.

The third time, when he had fully confirmed that Huang Yuanchang was the Omen, Geng Yue died yet again. The purpose this time wasn't to confuse him, but to attract the attention of Lu Jun and his partner. If he had hesitated for even half a second, he would have been trapped in the restaurant by the Night Watchers, and trying to force his way out would likely have resulted in a conflict with them.

And every step after that could be described as deliberately calculating against him.

That tree was indeed of a very high tier. This level of map-hacking was practically omniscience. Fortunately, it wasn't omnipotent and could only exert interference within reasonable limits.

Huang Yuanchang was indeed just a puppet who knew very little.

This should be the true form of Destined Death. Huang Yuanchang's so-called ability to see death and avoid danger was actually all orchestrated by this entity behind the scenes.

And its sole purpose was to allow the Seed of Law in Huang Yuanchang's head to take shape and become the so-called Golden Law.

Mortals may look directly upon gods...

Judging from the content, the specific effect of this Golden Law should be to break some kind of boundary, allowing people within a certain range to directly perceive the tree's true form.

This tree had probably been making similar efforts all along, choosing suitable people to become Omens.

Thinking about it now, according to Lu Xing's description, the source of his dreams and abilities was actually quite strange. It might very well be related to this entity too.

It's just that Lu Xing wasn't very cooperative and wasn't as proactive as Huang Yuanchang.

What a pity. No matter what kind of high-level existence you are, the power of a Tasker combined with infinite save-loading is beyond your imagination!

Fu Qian snorted and silently applauded himself for ten seconds in his heart.

After finishing his gloating, Fu Qian put the item back, and the silver-white box quickly closed again.

[Today's work has been completed. Thank you for your hard work.]

[You may now leave the Warehouse. See you tomorrow.]

Fu Qian took off his Work Badge. The scene before his eyes quickly shattered, and he returned once more to his familiar home.

Bafflingly playing a match against a god-level existence, today's workload was truly not small.

Of course, the harvest was also bountiful.

The perfect digestion of the Thug potion officially promoted him to Tier 4. Now, he truly stood at the pinnacle of Middle Tier Beyonders.

Fu Qian was confident that even if he confronted Li Weixuan head-on right now, he wouldn't be at a disadvantage.

Although the final reward might have been a bit shabby, it didn't hurt the overall situation.

He tried moving his limbs; an unprecedented explosive power surged within his body.

Fu Qian thought for a moment and chose not to rest. Instead, he went straight out and hailed a cab by the road.

There was something he needed to do.

"We're here!"

More than ten minutes later, the car stopped on a very bustling street.

It had been a while since he last came here.

Fu Qian got out of the car, looked at the young men and women around him, and felt a surge of emotion in his heart.

This was a rather famous street in Lincheng. Because it was situated in the middle of several nearby universities, it was always extremely lively.

However, as a local, Fu Qian only came here somewhat frequently back when he was in college; he really didn't visit much normally.

Of course, Fu Qian wasn't here to reminisce about his youth. Looking left and right, he quickly spotted a familiar signboard and walked in.

That's right, he was here to eat.

During the mission just now, being presented with delicious food three times in a row had successfully whetted his appetite.

Especially since he only had the chance to take a single bite the last two times, leaving him thoroughly unsatisfied.

Once the mission ended, after recalling the lingering flavors, his freely wandering mind naturally settled on the first place that popped into his head.

No wonder people say memories have flavors.

Of course, for Fu Qian, this sentence was purely literal.

As someone with a "terrible" personality who was generally a few years younger than his classmates, his school life had always been mostly solitary, and he rarely participated in popular activities.

Today was a workday, and it was still early, so there weren't many diners in the restaurant.

As soon as Fu Qian walked through the door, an attractive waitress came up to greet him.

"How many in your party, sir?"

"Two."

Fu Qian replied without changing his expression.

It wasn't that he was intentionally lying; on the way here, Fu Qian had gauged his appetite and had already decided to order food for two.

Saying it now would save him from having to explain himself later.

Under the waitress's guidance, Fu Qian found a window seat and looked at the scenery outside.

Behind this street was the Mi River that ran through Lincheng. It wasn't too big, but the slow-moving water and green trees made for a nice view.

Places like this didn't serve food quickly, and Fu Qian didn't stand on ceremony. The moment the first dish arrived, he picked up a piece without hesitation and started eating.

Starting to eat right away? Did he get stood up by a girl?

Seeing Fu Qian's actions, the waitress who had been paying attention to his table couldn't help but feel a little surprised.

Although Fu Qian was dressed ordinarily, the university town was nearby. It wasn't uncommon for someone to scrimp and save to treat their girlfriend to a luxurious meal, so the waitress was well-accustomed to such sights.

But for this customer to order a portion for two and then start eating by himself—it was hard not to let one's imagination run wild.

Fu Qian naturally noticed the waitress's strange look, but he didn't care in the slightest.

Fu Qian's principle was simple: as long as they didn't bother him, their imagination was their own personal freedom.

Over the course of an hour, Fu Qian rapidly annihilated dish after dish with a calm and efficient demeanor.

Finally, fully satisfied, Fu Qian pushed his plate away, stretched luxuriantly, and waved the waitress over.

"Hello!"

Seeing his gesture, the waitress walked over with a smile and stood before him.

"Check, please."

Fu Qian frowned. The waitress's smile was certainly sweet, but it felt inexplicably weird.

"Hello!"

Hearing his words, the waitress took a step closer. The smile on her face became even more purely immaculate, yet she still didn't say anything else.

Something's wrong!

Fu Qian frowned deeply and quickly looked around.

The next moment, a bizarre scene appeared before his eyes. Everyone in the entire restaurant—whether waitstaff, diners, or even the chefs in the glass-paneled kitchen—was currently staring at him, and all of them wore the exact same smile on their faces.

Pure and radiant like saints.

...

Blinking, Fu Qian checked the rewards from his latest mission.

Decree Residue... had it been left on this whole time?
