Horror Camgirl - Ch. 95: Why Do You Want to Kill Me?
Ye Xianluo sighed and said, “Shan City used to be just a prefecture-level city without a division of the Special Department. It was only after it was upgraded to a directly-governed city that a branch was established here. However, our foundation is weaker compared to other divisions, and combined with the fact that our members are generally not that strong, we've been constantly suppressed by surrounding divisions working together against us. As a result, our performance has been at the bottom for several consecutive years. Poor performance means fewer resources allocated to us. Sigh, in a couple of days, there’s a quarterly gathering where all the Southwest branches will participate. I suspect we’ll end up at the bottom again.”
I hadn’t expected that even within the Special Department, it was a jungle where the strong prey on the weak.
But it makes sense—companies also prioritize resources for the top-performing teams, don’t they?
Once Chen Dekai’s condition stabilized, Ye Xianluo took him away. Early the next morning, Hu Qingyu showed up at my doorstep, personally coming to thank me.
I poured him a cup of tea and said calmly, “Minister Hu, as the saying goes, ‘one does not visit the temple without reason.’ I doubt you’re here just to express your gratitude today.”
Minister Hu smiled and replied, “Madam Yuan, you’re indeed sharp. I won’t beat around the bush. I hope that for this upcoming quarterly meeting, you can participate as a representative of the Shan City branch.”
I said, “But I’m not part of the Shan City branch.”
“Madam Yuan, you can be affiliated with us in name only—not officially on the roster, not bound by our internal regulations, just an external member. Every branch has such external members, and their performance still counts toward the branch’s overall results,” Hu Qingyu explained.
I understood now—Shan City’s performance was poor, but in the past two months, I had repeatedly taken down various spirits and creatures. With my contribution, the Shan City branch might no longer be at the bottom.
Hu Qingyu sighed and said, “I understand that I’m asking for a lot, but think about it, Madam Yuan. You live in Shan City. Our branch is responsible for your safety. If our resources are insufficient and our members can't advance in strength, we’ll only grow weaker. Then, how will we protect you?”
His reasoning was quite persuasive, leaving me at a loss for words.
Indeed, I needed the Shan City branch, an official department, to shield me from those wolves eyeing me hungrily.
“Alright,” I agreed. “When is the quarterly meeting?”
“It’s in two days,” Hu Qingyu replied. “Tonight, we need to prepare to head to Chun City.”
That evening, we boarded a plane to Chun City. Accompanying us were Captain Jin and Xiao Lin.
Chun City, as its name suggests, enjoys spring-like weather all year round. As soon as we got off the plane, we switched to lighter clothing and checked into one of the city’s finest five-star hotels—the South of Chun City Hotel.
The Special Department’s quarterly meeting was being held at this very hotel.
As soon as we walked into the lobby, we heard a mocking voice say, “Well, if it isn’t Minister Hu.”
We all turned our heads to see a man in a leather jacket and sunglasses, followed by three younger individuals, entering the lobby.
Hu Qingyu’s face darkened. “Ma Wangjiang.”
This was none other than Ma Wangjiang, the head of the Rong City branch—a man in his thirties with lightning-type abilities. There had long been tensions between the Shan City and Rong City branches, and the two ministers were particularly at odds.
Captain Jin’s eyes flashed with a murderous glint, while Xiao Lin whispered to me, “That skinny guy over there is Liu Heping—the one who framed Chen Dekai.”
I glanced at the slender man. He wasn’t very tall, with a gaunt build and a sinister gaze that sent chills down your spine with just one glance.
Ma Wangjiang grinned as he said, “Minister Hu, it’s been a while. How’s the Shan City branch doing lately?”
Hu Qingyu sneered, “Thanks to you, our branch is thriving.”
“Oh, really?” Ma Wangjiang chuckled. “Then you must have impressive performance this quarter. I suppose you’ll be vying for more resources in the next one.”
Hu Qingyu gave him a cold look and said, “You’ll find out soon enough.”
Just as we were about to leave, Ma Wangjiang’s gaze suddenly landed on me. “And this person, wearing a hat and mask—isn’t this the renowned Madam Yuan?”
Our steps halted as Ma Wangjiang continued, “It looks like Madam Yuan has now become a member of the Shan City branch, no wonder Minister Hu is feeling so confident. I heard that Madam Yuan donated an ‘Eight Treasures Detox Soup’ to our Special Department. With this detoxifying soup, Shan City can earn a lot of points and boost its performance.”
The Special Department measures performance through a point system. After resolving supernatural cases, they award points based on the case's difficulty level—the higher the points, the better the performance.
Ma Wangjiang took two steps forward, smiling. “Madam Yuan, how about moving to Rong City? Our branch is much stronger and can offer you far better protection than Shan City.”
The blatant attempt to poach talent right in front of him made Hu Qingyu furious. His face darkened, and he said icily, “Ma Wangjiang, what’s the meaning of this?”
“My meaning is very clear,” Ma Wangjiang replied. “Given the limited strength of the Mountain City branch, Madam Yuan isn’t safe staying in Shan City. She was attacked by the Killing Gate on the Yangtze River recently, after all.”
The members of the Mountain City branch looked uncomfortable, so I stepped in with a light smile. “Thank you for your concern, Minister Ma, but I’m quite settled in Shan City and have no plans to move for now.”
Ma Wangjiang shrugged. “Madam Yuan, feel free to reconsider. If you change your mind, our doors are always open to you.”
On our way back, Hu Qingyu’s expression remained grim. Xiao Lin leaned close and whispered to me, “Madam Yuan, don’t believe their nonsense.”
I chuckled. “Shan City is my hometown. No matter what other places are like, nothing beats home.”
Xiao Lin and Captain Jin both visibly relaxed.
According to protocol, each branch leader was allocated a luxury suite, while regular personnel stayed in business singles. I planned to go downstairs to pick up some essentials, and as I stepped into the hallway, a woman walked directly toward me.
“Are you Madam Yuan?” she asked, blocking my way.
I looked her over—she was tall, around 1.75 meters, with a striking figure and dressed in a tight black outfit with a low neckline that revealed a deep cleavage.
“Yes, that’s me. And you are?” I asked warily.
“I’m Jin Lingyu from your city’s branch,” she said. “I want all the Qi-replenishing pills you have.”
My mouth twitched. This lady sure was assertive.
I replied coolly, “Ms. Jin, those pills are rare and not exactly sold by the pound like cabbages.”
Jin Lingyu’s face hardened. “The price is negotiable.”
“This isn’t about money,” I said. “I don’t have any on hand right now. Once I do, you’re welcome to buy them.”
I brushed past her, but she called out coldly, “Be careful in Chun City. It’s near the border, and things here get complicated quickly. Trouble is easy to find.”
I narrowed my eyes slightly. Was that a threat?
I looked back at her with a calm, detached gaze before stepping into the elevator.
As the elevator descended, it stopped on the tenth floor. A woman entered, holding the hand of a girl who looked around ten, the girl eating an ice cream cone as she walked.
I had been looking down at my phone, but suddenly felt an eerie chill. I immediately looked up and, catching a glimpse in the reflection of the elevator doors, saw the woman behind me staring fiercely, a glint of malice in her eyes as a dagger slipped from her sleeve, poised to stab me in the back.
I spun around in a flash, dodging her strike, and we started trading blows. Despite the cramped space, I packed Spiritual Energy into my punches, each one carrying a gust of force.
A sharp crack echoed as my fist connected with her chest, breaking bone with a sickening sound. She let out a pained scream, spitting up blood.
“Who are you, and why are you trying to kill me?” I demanded coldly.
The woman looked up at me and let out a chilling, malicious laugh.
Just then, I sensed something and glanced over at the girl. Her eyes were sharp, and a twisted, murderous smile played on her lips.
Suddenly, I felt a surge of force crash into my mind. For an ordinary person, this blow could cause instant brain damage, even death in severe cases.
But I was no ordinary person. My mental resilience as a cultivator was leagues beyond most. I snapped my eyes open, instantly nullifying her psychic attack and sending it rebounding back at her. She let out a bone-chilling scream, her head snapping backward as she crashed against the elevator wall, collapsing to the floor.
