Eldritch Horror Theatre - Ch. 61: Omen Must Die (7)
"What do we do now? Even the Night Watchers cannot push us around like this! Slinging mud at us with such blatant disregard!"
Watching the three walk away, Huang Jianyuan, having caught his breath, couldn't help but let out a low, suppressed growl.
"Father, say something!"
Having obviously never suffered such indignity in his life, Huang Jianyuan's mental resilience was teetering on the edge.
"What to do..." Huang Leji, his face equally ashen, finally spoke after a long silence.
"Get everyone out there. Search every inch of this place until we find that killer. If the Night Watchers want proof, we'll give them proof!"
Saying this through gritted teeth, Huang Leji waved his hand, and a figure flashed out.
"Keep a close eye on him..." He pointed at Fu Qian's retreating back. "He is not a Night Watcher... And our Huang Family isn't one to be easily extorted."
...
"What a place of outstanding people and natural beauty!" Leaving the Huang Family manor, Fu Qian looked back at the massive mountain peak under the setting sun and let out a sigh of admiration.
Team Leader Qiao grimaced. The shock from earlier was too great; he couldn't even manage an awkward smile right now.
Fu Qian glanced at him. The fact that Huang Jianyuan, rather than his old man, had come out to receive them earlier meant that when Qiao notified the Huang Family, he hadn't fully disclosed the situation here. He still had some sense of proportion.
The situation in Xiyuan City was likely a tacit understanding between the higher-ups of the Night Watchers and the Huang Family. Sending someone like Team Leader Qiao to guard this place proved exactly that.
The accusation was, of course, complete nonsense he made up on the spot. But regardless of whether the Huang Family was wronged today, there was no time to bicker with them. He had to force them to take action.
What lay before them was not just a madman who enjoyed torturous killings, but a calamity that could descend at any moment.
As a behemoth fed and sustained by the flesh and blood of a region, these families naturally had responsibilities to bear. They couldn't just brush it off with a simple claim of innocence.
He had to admit that Su Gao was a smart person. Even without prior communication, she immediately took a firm stance right after he spoke, saving him a lot of breath.
As for whether the Huang Family would be driven to desperate measures? Fu Qian had no worries about that.
According to the information he had gathered earlier, while these great noble families were certainly powerful, they were still completely incomparable to the number one Beyonder organization.
In fact, Fu Qian was curious about how such an organization was established. Logically speaking, it was almost completely inconsistent with sociology.
Even if you gave the Huang Family a hundred times the courage, Fu Qian didn't believe they'd dare to make a move against the Night Watchers.
The Night Watchers might have had a tacit agreement with them before, but that was merely out of respect for a local power, giving them a little more breathing room.
However, things might be different for him.
Even before leaving the Huang Family manor, Fu Qian had noticed a distinct, scrutinizing gaze, and was certain he was already being watched.
Sigh! An unofficial title like "Expert Consultant" really doesn't carry much deterrent power!
...
By the time the three returned to the Night Watcher Base, it was already dark.
Lu Jun and his partner hadn't returned yet; they were probably working overtime outside.
The Huang Family personnel were likely in the same state right now.
As the mastermind behind all this, Fu Qian stretched lazily.
He had done everything he needed to do. Next, it was time to Observe Quietly.
Although the Nightwatcher Base wasn't large, it still had guest rooms for transient personnel. After settling in under Team Leader Qiao's arrangement, Fu Qian found the conditions surprisingly good.
Not to mention the unreasonably large space, all kinds of facilities were readily available.
Even the walls were made of special materials, pushing the safety factor off the charts. Furthermore, if he wasn't mistaken, even the curtains had a significant perception-isolating effect.
As long as the curtains were drawn, the outside world couldn't perceive the slightest movement inside.
So sneaky... ahem, so wealthy and imposing!
With such an arrogant and wealthy organization, should he consider grabbing an official post in it if he gets the chance?
Fu Qian thought as he drew the curtains.
He wondered if the tail that had been watching him all the way back would get a little anxious because of this.
Fu Qian got his answer that very night.
Waking up from his sleep, although he hadn't turned on the lights, Fu Qian was very certain that something had slipped into his room.
Actually, for him now, sleeping had almost become a recreational activity. If necessary, not sleeping for several days straight wouldn't have any effect.
But years of habit meant he always had a special fondness for a bed.
This thing didn't seem to be a living creature.
Fu Qian clearly sensed a pitch-black bug scuttling in along the corner of the wall.
Its shape was indeed that of a bug, but its body seemed to be composed of intangible smoke.
It was highly likely some special Beyonder method, conjured up for reconnaissance.
It seemed the person outside was truly anxious, actually daring to pull this little stunt inside the Night Watchers' Base.
The little bug crawled on the ground for a bit and then stopped, seemingly trying to confirm if he was in the room.
Fu Qian held his breath and concentrated, directly dropping his heartbeat to almost nothing.
Ever since activating Feast, this kind of thing had become a breeze for him.
Sure enough, the little bug seemed to hesitate, unsure if it should move closer to investigate.
A moment later, the little bug finally moved, inching towards the bed.
Fu Qian initially wanted to play with it for a while, but the next moment, there was a sharp tearing sound.
A fierce blade light pierced directly through the wall, accurately slicing through the bug's body.
The bug was cleaved cleanly in half, then dissipated into a wisp of smoke.
He could feel the consciousness linked to it tremble, then rapidly retreat.
Fu Qian sat up from the bed, and immediately after, there was a knock on the door.
Getting out of bed and opening the door, he found Su Gao standing outside.
"Mr. Fu, someone is watching you," Su Gao said respectfully.
"Do you need me to clear them out?"
This was showing him a bit too much respect!
Discovering a threat, and actually asking for his opinion before deciding whether to eliminate it.
It looked like as long as he gave the word, Su Gao would immediately take out the peeping tom.
"No need, keep them around. They still have their uses."
Fu Qian blinked. He hadn't been so arrogant at the Huang Family today for no reason.
He had already memorized the aura of the bug's owner.
Hearing Fu Qian's words, Su Gao nodded. She didn't press further about what use he had for them, but instead left silently.
Fu Qian closed the door and looked at the long slash mark carved into the wall.
Su Gao was indeed living right next door to him.
He could sense that Su Gao, having returned to her room, still wasn't sleeping. Instead, she stood perfectly straight by the window, motionless.
For a brief moment, it was as if she had lost all signs of life and become a true marionette.
Her condition was indeed quite peculiar!
The hole in the wall naturally couldn't be hidden from Team Leader Qiao and the others. The next day, when Fu Qian saw them again, although their eyes were bright and their expressions serious, their occasionally darting glances made Fu Qian faintly feel their gossiping souls burning. They were probably spending half their time guessing the relationship between him and Su Gao.
Before he could say anything, Team Leader Qiao received a message and walked out. A moment later, he returned with a strange expression.
"The head of the Huang Family wishes to visit. He says he has information to share with us."
